Airport Highlight: MVD (Carrasco International airport).— The new terminal at the Uruguayan capital's airport was inaugurated in 2009, roughly two years before I got to visit it. Its striking design by renowned local architect Rafael Viñoly is already a landmark and the building is almost fully operated by renewable energies. The big roof of double curvature extends for almost 400 meters (1,300 feet) and it can handle up to 4.5 million passengers a year. ✈
